11 Signs of a Credit Repair Scam (and How to Avoid Them)

Eleven red flags that you're dealing with a credit repair scam — and the legitimate questions you should ask before hiring anyone.

The credit repair industry attracts scammers because the audience is often desperate. Here's how to spot one in under 60 seconds.

11 Red Flags

1. They Ask for Money Before Doing Any Work

The Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA) prohibits this. If they want $500 upfront, walk away.

2. They Guarantee a Specific Score Increase

"We guarantee 100 points!" — illegal under CROA. No legitimate company can guarantee specific results because the bureaus and furnishers decide what deletes.

3. They Offer to Create a "New Credit Identity"

This is the CPN scam (Credit Privacy Number, Credit Profile Number). They sell you a stolen Social Security Number — often a child's or deceased person's — and have you apply for credit with it. This is federal identity fraud. You will be prosecuted.

4. They Tell You Not to Contact the Bureaus Yourself

A legitimate company has nothing to hide. You should always have access to your reports.

5. There's No Written Contract

CROA requires a written contract with specific cancellation rights. No contract = walking away.

6. They Tell You to Dispute Everything as "Not Mine"

If items are legitimately yours, claiming they aren't is potentially fraud. Legitimate disputes are based on actual inaccuracies, age, or unverifiability.

7. They Promise Overnight Results

Real disputes take 30+ days for each round. Anyone claiming faster is selling vapor.

8. They Use Pressure Tactics

"Sign up today or the price doubles." Legitimate companies don't manufacture urgency.

9. They're Not Registered as a CSO

Most states require credit repair companies to register as a Credit Services Organization and post a bond. Check your state's Secretary of State website.

10. No Physical Address or Phone Number

A real business has a real address.

11. They Won't Show You What They're Sending

You should be able to see every dispute letter, every response from the bureaus, every action taken on your behalf.

Questions to Ask Before Hiring

  1. Are you registered as a Credit Services Organization?
  2. Can I see your written contract?
  3. What's your cancellation policy?
  4. Do you bill upfront or monthly?
  5. What specific disputes will you send on my behalf?
  6. Can I see copies of every letter you send?
  7. What's your refund policy?

A legitimate company answers all seven clearly.
